Rocket Boat - floating advertising agency

In summer 2016, we were inspired by the summer, the sun and the waves at work and set sail. For two weeks, our "Rocket Boat" cruised across Lake Lucerne between Flüelen and Lucerne, with customers and guests on board, and of course with all our employees, who were inspired by the atmosphere to perform at their best.

We had the idea for the Rocket Boat a few years earlier when we were thinking about a possible new agency location. At the time, we were considering buying a boat instead of a traditional office and working on a boat permanently or during the summer months.

For the agency's 10th anniversary in autumn 2015, we finally decided to realize our dream in the form of a pop-up office on the lake. From 4 to 15 July 2016, we worked from Monday to Friday on a 17-metre-long, three-storey motorboat. While we created, illustrated and programmed on the middle deck, customers were received on the airy upper deck or the loungy aft deck, depending on the weather. A professional captain ensured that work could be carried out undisturbed. There was no fixed timetable. The route was based on customer appointments or the wishes of the crew.

Media representatives also took advantage of the event for a few hours in the open air. Tele1 and SRF3 radio, among others, reported live from the "Rocket Boat".

Initially, the Rocket Boat Experiment was to be a purely internal project. However, when customers, partners and friends found out about it, they were enthusiastic about the project and bombarded the Rocket Crew with questions. Everyone thought it was great, some had doubts as to whether it would work, others immediately asked for a lift. We also shared the adventure with friends, customers and other interested parties via our website and social media. A diary, boat tracker, live cam and other channels ensured a lively exchange with the rural population.

Rocket Boat - FAQ about the project

Who steers the Rocket Boat?

Looking ahead, navigating and steering is key in advertising and marketing. Whether Red or Blue Ocean Strategy, we sometimes guide our clients through stormy waters. At sea, however, we prefer to leave the helm of our 17-meter yacht to a professional. That's why we temporarily supplement our crew with a professional external captain. After all, we are on the boat to work.

How do your customers reach you?

We can be reached as usual by phone, e-mail, Skype, Google Hangout etc. Letters will be delivered to the landing stage.

We are ideally equipped for presentations and meetings on the boat. Some of our customers are easy to reach by sea. Others we pick up in the port of Lucerne, for example.

How do you do it technically - with the data?

Our boat is not only equipped with radar and echo sounder, but also with a powerful MiFi (a WiFi that connects via the 4G mobile network). Sometimes we are also within range of other WLAN connections. This ensures a constant connection to our data server.

Isn't the project associated with high costs?

This has to be seen in relative terms, a weighing up of cost and return. We do not see the effort as a cost, but as an investment. The main return can hardly be monetized. It is made up of the anticipation, the experience and the memory. We also use our non-everyday place of work as an opportunity to strengthen our customer relationships and welcome potential customers on board.

What about sun and fun?

Basically, we are actually on the boat to work. However, we will certainly find time to enjoy the scenery on the upper deck with a coffee and a breeze or to get new ideas with a refreshing dip in the lake. We certainly won't return from our excursion as pale faces. We also treat ourselves to a fun day of swimming, barbecuing and wakeboarding with friends.

Will "the agency on the lake" remain a one-off story?

The original idea was to install the agency permanently on a boat. The summer experiment will show us how great the idea really is. So it's not entirely out of the question that we might actually move our company headquarters to a boat or set up a pop-up office in a completely different location.
